It's not a valuable horn, but as you say it sounds fine. Most of them do. It helps if you have a shop or garage. It's all dirty work and often toxic. But, a good chance to practice on the basics. Preparation, soldering, buffing. It's all messy stuff. Germans and Czechs brought the traditions of brass instrument making to Russia. The old St Petersburg factory (who probably built this trombone) is still in business. There is no reason why the instruments should be inferior in any way to equivalent instruments from any country. I'm sure they made rough band instruments just like everywhere else but there is no reason why the better instruments wouldn't measure up. Development was certainly behind that of Europe. Russian production got underway later with input from people like Cerveny and Schediwa. The St Petersburg production began with the establishment of  J.H. Zimmermann.
