| Vienna valves
Tubaron: Anybody got a guess on its key? Range--bass? Must be a nightmare to drain water from it.
Pryorphone: I will take a shot... Eb/D/C/Bb (?)
Tubaron: This is a multiple choice exam?...It appears to me it is continuous tubing from the mouthpiece right into valve 3, so I do not see how it could be multiple keys. The total tubing looks so much longer than a standard Bb, that is why I wonder it is pitched lower (fifth, octave?), thus maybe a bass? But the tubing diameter is fairly small.
And what about those valve? Are there paddles on the far side? Or do the parts we can see push down (like the little parts between the upright tubes). What are they called?
Pryorphone: The valves are called Vienna valves, and they would have plungers on the far side. I based my guess on the apparent bore/valve tubing length, and I think that each complete turn on the mouthpipe would be a removable crook, all adding up to a Bb length.
Tubaron: I can see a junction in the lead pipe just beyond the first loop. Sure wish the photo were higher resolution. This would be a good time for bastrompet to chime in with some additional info.
Bastrompet: The only extra info I have got is the total length is 42 in. I do not know if that is with or without mp.
I took the original pic to photoshop and to me it seems the first 3 loops can be taken off.
Tubaron: Individually? or as a 3-loop unit?
Looking closer at the tubing for valves 1 and 3, and at the size of the mouthpiece, I posit that this is a valve trombone. The valve tubings are very similar to those on an antique Italian tenor horn currently on ebay, thus my conclusion. Given the overall length of 42 in, this certainly could be in the range of a tenor trombone.
Bastrompet: I think individualy. I think you always need the first loop for the mp receiver.
Pryorphone: But do not forget that baroque/classical trumpets were also in that range!
