Horn-u-Copia's Display of Makers

Maker/Dealer

Clark Music Company

1859 - 2011

Established in 1859, in Syracuse NY by George Clark.

Though previously reported that their Brass instruments were built by George McFadden, it appears that was in error, as McFadden advertised that he stated that his instruments could only be purchased at his shop because he did not sell through retail music shops or make stencil horns. In addition, there is no indication of an association between Clark and McFadden in the Syracuse City Directories for the period that George McFadden was active.

Melville Clark also made pianos and player pianos as Story and Clark

Melville Clark was the grandson of George Waldo Clark and was active in the development of the synthesizer.

Clark Music in Syracuse closed its doors in 2011. No evidence has been found that George McFadden had any association with Clark Music. McFadden’s output was so small (estimated to be around five hundred instruments) that he had all he could do to fill custom orders, and wouldn’t have had the stock to supply a retailer. Further, in his advertisements, he stated that his instruments could only be purchased at his shop because he did not sell through retail music shops or make stencil horns. I think that any statement that McFadden made horns for Clarke is purely conjecture and probably incorrect.
