Slant-Rotor Tuba With Alterable 4th Valve Interval

Marzan

-

In 1968, Dr. Frederick Marzan designed his own models of tuba and euphonium. His designs were inspired by the Sander tuba for his slant-rotor Marzan tubas. Marzan tubas were available in five different models through DEG Music Products of Lake Geneva, Wisconsin.

These were all stencil horns. Bohm and Meinl made the tubas with the 19 in bells, and Willson made the tubas with the smaller 17 bells.

D.E.G. Music has imported both Kurath-made and B&M-made tubas over the years under various names, and there is little doubt that the front-action compensating Marzan euphoniums were nearly undoubtedly Kurath-made. I dont believe that Fred Marzan was particularly interested in highlighting the origins of various models, as I believe he enjoyed having all of his various offerings associated exclusively with him.

There were two basic designs: One is a non-auto-compensator ... and the other is a Blakely compensator, which survives as the Willson 2975.
