Sudrophone basse (bass sudrophone)
4 valves (Sudre, Paris, early 20th century).
The sudrophone version of the euphonium. Sudrophones have an adjustable built-in mirliton which give the option of the timbe of either a normal euphonium, a tenor saxophone, or anything in between.
from The Cambridge Encyclopedia of Brass Instruments:
Sudrophone A group of valved brass instruments characterized by a timbre-altering device which can be activated at will.
The sudrophone device has a membrane which acts as a mirliton (a timbre modifier similar to the membrane in a kazoo) fixed in a rectangular window in a brass cylinder attached to the bell of the instrument. There is a rectangular window of similar size in the bell of the instrument; the cylinder can be rotated by the player to completely or partially align the membrane with the window in the bell. When the device is not operated, the membrane is not aligned with the window in the bell, which is then covered by the wall of the brass cylinder, and the sudrophone behaves like a normal instrument. When the membrane is completely aligned with the window in the bell, the vibration of the membrane adds a pungent buzzing quality to the sound. The cylinder can be rotated to allow a continuous variation in timbre: intermediate settings can give the instrument a timbre reminiscent of a saxophone. The membrane, which can be tensioned by a screwed knob, was originally of silk cloth, but a thin plastic sheet also works well. The sudrophone device has been added to the cornet and to saxhorns of all sizes.
The sudrophone was invented by the Parisian maker François Sudre and patented in France in 1892 (see Patents). Sudre built all sudrophones in a characteristic wrap influenced by the ophicleide with the valve cluster placed near the centre of the instrument and projecting out to the side. The tubing below the level of the valves with the U-shaped bow can be detached to facilitate transportation (Figure 83). Sudrophones could be bought from the maker’s Paris shop as late as the 1960s. Despite providing a significant addition to the range of timbres available to the brass instrumentalist, the sudrophone seems never to have made the transition from novelty to normality: although enough survive to represent the sudrophone in instrument collections, it never achieved the popularity of the echo bell.
