3179 Trumpet Higham
Jazzer: As a boy I had always wanted a trumpet. The Jazz greats - Armstrong, Berrigan, Charlie Shavers and the like, focused my attention. WW2 was on and horns were not available in NZ. A used Higham arrived at a Brass Band practice night and was offered for sale by the mother of a local soldier killed in the desert war in North Africa. I was totally enchanted by it and of course bought it. It played beautifully and I used it from age 16 to 25 years and took it with me to Japan when I was the Music Specialist in the NZ Army Education Service, British Commonwealth Occupation Forces. Could not find a better one to replace it in Japan at that time. Back home I bought a new Besson International, a good horn and sold the Higham to a High school student. My quest now is to find a good photo and any info on this old Higham. Sorry I can not remember the model or serial but it was distinguished by the unusual style of the bell tube running down the right side of the valves like a flugel and the mouthpiece pipe going directly into the first valve. Tuned out of the third valve into the bell. A beautifully engraved silver instrument . I have no close-up photo but will attempt one from a photo of me playing it when only a boy. I have never seen another horn like this and have ever regretted parting with it. If anyone has seen one of these or has details or a photo I would be greatly interested.
