Engraved: Patented Light Valve, Distin & Co. makers, 9&10 Grt Newport St. London, 25642.
Valve cluster numbered 15258
Distin was at this 1862-8
Distin sold out to Boosey in 1868, but Boosey continued to use the name Distin and Co, and used the field trumpet and banner. Distin agreed not to make instruments under his own name within 100 miles of London.
I also learned something else from Arnold. These horns were called Ventil horns. This answers a lot of questions for me because I have been trying to peg the Ventil horns for years. At a glance the darned things look like other bell-up instruments. The tip-off is the cylindrical tubing, the bell size and type, and the lack of a lead-pipe.
Boosey was at 9-11 Grt Newport St. London in 1868. So, one can speculate that this horn was possibly made by Boosey before the expansion.
GSMonks: I just heard back from Arnold Myers, and according to him, despite appearances this is a circular, bell-up, Bb valved trombone. I readily admit that I was fooled both by the appearance, and the fact that I have never seen or heard of such a thing.
