Daruby: Curved tuning slide brace vs. straight brace....I realize this is an old posting, but I just wanted to let all know that the earlier Pan American 56Is had the straight brace and the later horns had the curved brace on the tuning slide receiver. Otherwise the horns are the same. I have a 1932 that is straight and a 1934 that is curved. Given the inexpensive construction of these horns and the fact that the tuning slide is just a bent tube (with no brace itself) I suspect they went to the curved brace so that they could "align" the tuning slides and receiver more easily (i.e. by "ball peen" adjustment). I know that I can interchange tuning slides on my two horns but it requires some "adjustment" to get them to align properly. Also a note on how these horns play: The later Conn 14I baritone that was the standard student horn of the 50s and 60s is essentially identical to the bell-front Pan American. Conn quit making student model top-loader bell-up horns when they discontinued the 56I. However the 56I is generally constructed similar to the later 14I an 15I. I use mine for solo work because it has a very rich, sweet sound and plays remarkably well in tune. In most respects, it plays almost identically to my Conn Connstellation 24I, except it does not have the 4th valve or spring loaded tuning slide. If Conn were still making this horn, Yamaha/Weril/Jupiter would not own the student 3-valve Euphonium market.
