| PRESENTATION CORNET
Engraved: 4029 LYON & HEALY DUPLEX OWN MAKE CHICAGO USA.
Around the edge of the bell: HIRAM L. Mc CAULEY SEPT 10TH 1904.
There is a small plaque that reads:A J. NEUMANNS B PAT APRIL 11, 99.
This is the "Duplex" indicator. It actually reads "J. Neumanns / A B / Pat April 11, 99". The "A" and "B" are the two ways the horn may be set (A and Bb). Unlike most surviving examples, the one above appears to have a working key change mechanism.
The patent for this horn can be found at:
CORNET
(L&H Duplex)
Patent number: 622820
Filing date: Aug 16, 1897
Issue date: Apr 11, 1899
Inventor: JULIUS J. NEUMANN
It took some digging to find it, but the patent is essentially the same as the production model, and assigned to Lyon & Healy.

| hornworks: By the way, I bought the Own Make shown in #26. It is a Duplex with the Vienna valve that changes it from Bb to A and rods connected to automatically extend the 1st and 3 slides for A. Of course, none of it works but a guy can always hope!

OLDLOU: I just today bought a Lyon and Healy "Own Make" cornet which is similar in all ways to reply # 18. What intrigues me is that this little horn is NOT a shepherds crokk design, but, has the leaf springs on the spit valves which would indicate to me that it was quite an early production. It plays a treat.
Kenton: L&H did not start making Own Make until 1896, so this horn can not be any older than that.. . . now to find another short cornet without a shepherds crook. The Conn-Dupont did not have it, an 1893 Distin did not have it. But, you are right, most of the pre-1900 cornets are shepherds crook, and those that are not seem to be mostly imports.
