Description | The trumpet is a small bore Bb in silver-plated brass with the emblem without the flags and a star-x mark. It has the standard engraving about the army and conservatory. The construction is similar to the Charlier model, except that the lead pipe bends down from the level of the bell to go into the first valve, and the overall height is smaller. The lead pipe extension has a receiver that’s too small for a standard trumpet mouthpiece. |

Description | Bore: .390
Biber: How does it play? Intonation?
Keeferman: The intonation is about as good as any decent quality Bb trumpet made today, with the first slide saddle (ring in this case) being used on the normally out of tune notes.
One would think that the lack of conical tubing in the leadpipe would cause drastic intonation issues, but this does not seem to be the case except in the extreme low register where the notes do become a little stuffy and slightly flat. The valve depression is very shallow at .535 inch, which makes fast passages a little easier, but the pistons are just brass with no plating, and I have not found a valve oil that will work well for very long. Actually, playing this trumpet is a little like playing a piccolo trumpet in that the upper register is a little easier (and quite bright), and the blow is very different from a normal Bb trumpet which takes a while to get used to.
Biber: Forgive my skepticism but are you certain that there is no conicity in the lead pipe? Are you basing this on an external cylindrical profile or have you checked this internally?
the reason I ask is because several american made instruments have leadpipes that are cylindrical on the outside but are indeed tapered on the inside.
Keeferman: It is very difficult to measure (without very sophisticated gauging equipment) the bore taper of a tube. I can tell you that the outside diameter is actually .015 larger at the mouthpiece receiver end than at the tuning slide end, but this tells us very little about the inside. If you have ever cleaned the barrel of a shotgun for example, when you slide the tightly fitting swab down the barrel from the breech towards the muzzle, you can "feel" the choke. When I clean the leadpipe on my trumpets, I use an old clarinet swab which fits snugly when started from the tuning slide end, and it gets much tighter as it approaches the receiver. Not so on this instrument. While this may not be the scientific answer you were looking for, I can tell you that I feel no difference at all when I clean the leadpipe on this trumpet from end to end. If there is any taper, it must be quite minimal compared to any other trumpet that I have ever encountered (and Ive seen hundreds). If I happen to stumble upon a household item that is either cylindrically or spherically the exact diameter necessary to properly gauge this tube, Ill post the results here. In the meantime, I have to maintain that I can detect no taper to this leadpipe.
Mahillon instruments are very difficult to research because there is almost no information available. Even if a serial number list were available, it would do me no good because there is no serial number on this instrument. No numbers at all in fact, not even 1,2,3 on the valve casings. I can only guess that because the engraving is very much in the art deco style, that it was made somewhere between 1920 and 1935(which was the end of the original Mahillon factory as far as I know). If there is a Mahillon expert out there somewhere, I would appreciate any help that you could offer.
Ive finally found a way to accurately gauge the leadpipe on this instrument, and it is indeed a perfectly straight tube. In the process I found that my estimate of .395 was a bit generous, as I measured the bore to actually be only .390 inch. I was concerned for a while there as it seemed to have a slight tight spot just below the mouthpiece receiver, but then I noticed a very shallow dent on the outside of the pipe at that point which accounts for the tightness there. While I suspect that the inadequacies Ive described earlier in the extreme low register on this Mahillon are most likely the result of the straight leadpipe, it actually plays quite normally from middle C on up.
Biber: Yikes thats a small bore!! the intonation anomalies of the low register are to be expected with a cylindrical leadpipe. Now if only we can attribute an accurate date for it.
This is all very interesting and quite unexplainable in my opinion, given that Mahillon was such noted acoustician.
keeferman: I agree. I cant really believe that Victor Mahillon designed this instrument. It must have been made after his death in 1924. One possible explaination could be that it was an experimental "piccolo" trumpet made by the company in Bb length intended to be played only in the upper register, thus allowing "normal" fingerings for non piccolo notated music. Well probably never know for sure, but it certainly is a very odd trumpet to say the least.

Description | made in Belgium. It is intricately engraved all around the bell, including the signature:
C. MAHILLON
Fournisseur de larmée et des conservatoires Bruxelles
And
MODELE ADOPTE par Mr. THEO CHARLIER
Théo Charlier was a privileged witness of the evolution and the manufacturing of the trumpet. His contribution to the style progress of trumpeters was considerable. His influence will have a decisive effect on the rapidity with which the trumpet will get its preponderant place at the end of the 19th century. Taking account of the technical and artistic evolution of the trumpet, he will be one of the most talented instrumental performers, not at all avoiding the difficult parts composed by baroque music masters and which nobody dared to play. It seems he was the first instrumentalist to perform, in its integral version and without modifications, the perilous trumpet part of the 2nd Brandenburg Concerto written by Johann Sebastian Bach.
